Sewage or Water Backing Up Right Now: First Ten Minutes
A backup is wastewater with nowhere to go. These moves limit the damage until a licensed plumber is on the way.
Stop adding water.
Do not flush, run the washer, or start the dishwasher. Every gallon you add goes to the lowest open drain, usually a tub or shower on the ground floor.
Keep people and pets clear.
Backed-up drain water carries bacteria. Keep children and pets out, wear rubber gloves and boots if you must step in it, and wash your hands afterward.
Skip the chemical drain opener.
Do not pour bleach or caustic drain cleaner into a backup. It sits in the standing water, burns skin, and makes the job unsafe for the plumber who has to open the line.
Check whether more than one drain is slow.
If only the kitchen sink is stuck, the clog is local. If the toilet gurgles when you run the shower, or a floor drain bubbles, the blockage is in the main line. Tell us which drains are involved when you call.
Call for same-day or after-hours help.
Dispatch answers at any hour, and a backup at 2 a.m. gets the same attention as one at noon. Call (817) 601-6266 and we will line up the next available licensed plumber.
Which Drain Symptom Means Which Tool
The right tool depends on what the drain is doing and how far down the clog sits. This is how our plumbers match symptom to method.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Tool we use |
|---|---|---|
| One sink or tub drains slowly | Hair, soap scum or grease in the trap arm | Hand auger or small drum machine, 1/4 inch cable. |
| Kitchen sink gurgles and backs up | Grease and food solids in a 1.5 inch line | Drum machine with a 3/8 inch cable and cutting head. |
| Toilet and tub back up together | Blockage in the 3 or 4 inch main line | Larger sectional cable through the cleanout. |
| Same clog returns every few months | Roots, scale or a belly in the pipe | Camera inspection, then hydro-jetting. |
| Floor drain or yard drain overflows | Silt, debris or a collapsed section | Cable plus camera to confirm pipe condition. |
A camera view takes the guessing out of repeat clogs and tells you whether cleaning is enough or a repair is needed.
Clogs by Fixture: Kitchen, Shower, Tub and Main Line
Where the water backs up tells us a lot. We start with the fixture, then follow the pipe toward the main line until the blockage is found.
Drain work is held to the venting and trap standards in the plumbing code, and Crowley uses the 2021 International Plumbing Code. That standard is why a clean drain still needs a properly vented trap to keep working.
Kitchen sink clogs
Kitchen drains are narrow, usually 1.5 inch pipe, and grease is the main culprit. Cooking fat runs through the trap as liquid, cools, and coats the pipe wall until only a pencil-sized opening is left. Coffee grounds, rice and eggshells then catch on that coating.
We run a drum machine with a cutting head to scrape the wall clean instead of poking a hole through the middle. If your disposal is part of the problem, we also look at garbage disposal repair before closing up.
Shower and tub drains
Hair is the usual blockage here, bound together with soap scum. Crowley water runs 6 to 9 grains per gallon of hardness, and hard water leaves a chalky film that gives hair something to grip. A small cable with a barbed tip pulls the mass out in one piece.
If a tub drains fine but a shower on the same branch is slow, the clog is farther down the line, past the point where the two join. We run the cable from the nearest accessible cleanout instead of fighting through the trap.
Main line blockages
The main line is the 3 or 4 inch pipe that carries everything from the house toward the street connection. When it clogs, the lowest fixture shows it first, often a ground-floor tub or a floor drain.
We open the cleanout, run a larger cable, and then send a camera to see what caused it. If the camera shows roots or a crushed section, we talk through sewer line cleaning or sewer line repair with you before any work starts.
Slow drains that are not fully stopped
A slow drain is an early warning. Water that takes ten seconds longer to leave the sink means the pipe is already narrowing. Clearing it now is a short visit, while waiting turns it into a full backup on a holiday weekend.
Snaking, Cabling and Jetting: What Each Does
People use these words loosely, so here is how they differ in practice.
Hand snake
A hand-cranked auger for a clog close to the fixture. Good for a trap or the first few feet of a branch line, not for anything deeper.
Drum machine cable
A motorized cable in sizes from 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch. It spins a cutting head through grease, hair, paper and light roots.
Camera inspection
A flexible camera on a push rod shows the pipe from inside. We use it to confirm the clog is gone and to spot cracks, offsets or a low spot holding water.
Hydro-jetting
Water at high pressure scours the full pipe wall. It is the choice for heavy grease, scale and repeat clogs, and we cover it on the hydro-jetting page.
Cleanout access
A capped fitting that gives a straight path into the main line. If your home lacks a usable one, we can often add one so future service is faster and cleaner.
Pipe repair
When the camera shows damage, cleaning only buys time. Spot repair or replacement of the failed section is the honest fix.
When the City Should Hear About It
Street main or your own line
Sewage in the street, or several neighbors backing up at once, usually means the blockage is in the city main and not in your pipe. After hours, the City of Crowley lists wastewater backup calls through Police Dispatch at 817-297-2276, and Public Works can be reached at 817-297-2201 during the day.
If the backup is inside your house and the street looks normal, the blockage is usually in your own line, and that is where we work. Not sure which one you have? Call us and we will talk through what you are seeing, and ask Public Works where the city side of the line ends.
Drain stopped and water rising?
Our 24/7 line is staffed, and a licensed plumber can come out the same day when available.
What You Can Try First, and When to Stop
A plunger and a few minutes can save a service call on a simple clog. Pushing past that point can make things worse.
Safe to try yourself
- Use a flat-bottom cup plunger on a sink or tub with the overflow plugged by a wet rag.
- Use a flange plunger on a toilet and give it a dozen steady strokes.
- Remove the hair stopper and pull out what you can see by hand.
- Flush a slow kitchen drain with a kettle of hot, not boiling, water and dish soap.
Call a plumber when
- More than one fixture is slow or gurgling.
- Water or sewage comes up in a tub, shower or floor drain.
- You smell sewer gas after plunging.
- The clog returns within days or weeks.
- A store-bought auger gets stuck or the cable will not advance.
What Affects the Price of Drain Cleaning
We quote the job by phone and confirm a clear price before work starts. These are the things that move the number.
Homeowners policies usually cover sudden and accidental water damage, and usually do not cover damage from a slow, long-running clog or normal wear. Ask your carrier before you file, and keep photos of the backup and any wet flooring.
Drain Lines in Crowley Neighborhoods
Crowley grew 40.8 percent between 2010 and 2020, from 12,838 to 18,070 people. Many homes in subdivisions such as Mayfair, Mayfair South and Sendero Oaks sit on comparatively recent building sewers, while the area around the old railroad downtown is the older core. We never assume the age or pipe material of any neighborhood. The camera tells us what is in the ground, and that decides whether cleaning is enough.
Homes near FM 1187 and FM 731 use the same building sewer rules, and the city requires building sewers to sit at least 12 inches below grade under the local plumbing code amendments. If a camera run shows a section that has shifted or settled, we can explain what a repair involves and, if work needs a permit, point you to the Crowley building department.
We also serve neighbors in Burleson and Everman, where the same tools and the same approach apply. For a repeat clog that keeps coming back, a camera view is the fastest way to find out why.
Habits That Keep Drains Running
Most clogs we clear were made slowly over months. A few habits stretch the time between visits.
- Scrape pans and plates into the trash, and let used cooking grease cool in a can instead of the sink.
- Use a hair catcher in every shower and tub drain, and empty it after each use.
- Flush only toilet paper and human waste. Wipes sold as flushable still catch on roots and rough pipe joints.
- Run hot water for 30 seconds after washing greasy dishes to carry residue past the trap.
- Pour a kettle of hot water and a squirt of dish soap down the kitchen drain once a month.
- Keep the cleanout cap clear of mulch, soil and landscaping so it can be found fast.
If you do all of that and a drain still slows, the pipe itself may have a low spot, a root intrusion or scale buildup. That is a camera job, and a short visit usually settles it.
Drain Cleaning Questions We Hear Often
Yes. Our dispatch line is open 24/7, including weekends and holidays, and a sewage backup at midnight is treated as an emergency. A licensed plumber can come out the same day or after hours when available, and we confirm a clear price before work starts.
While you wait, stop using water in the house, keep the area clear of children and pets, and avoid chemical drain openers.
Sewage in the street, a manhole overflowing, or several neighbors backing up at once points to the city main. A backup in just your house, especially the lowest tub or floor drain, points to your own line. The City of Crowley lists after-hours wastewater backup calls through Police Dispatch at 817-297-2276.
No. Snaking, or cabling, pushes a spinning cable through the clog and opens a channel. Hydro-jetting uses pressurized water to scour the entire pipe wall. Cabling is typical for a simple clog, and jetting makes sense for heavy grease, scale or a clog that keeps returning.
We advise against it. Caustic cleaners can sit in the pipe, damage older metal fittings, and burn skin if the water splashes. If the cleaner fails, the plumber then has to work around a chemical-filled drain.
Kitchen lines usually carry grease that hardens on the pipe wall. Bathroom lines collect hair and soap scum, and hard water leaves a mineral film that makes buildup stick. If clogs return, a camera inspection shows whether the pipe has a low spot or roots.
Not for a typical clog. Most blockages are reached through a cleanout, a fixture or a vent. Digging only comes into the picture if the camera shows a broken or collapsed section that cleaning cannot fix, and we explain that option before anything starts.
Yes. We serve Crowley and nearby towns, including Forest Hill, and can often schedule a same-day appointment when available. Call and tell us the town and which drain is giving you trouble.
