Main Line Backup: Is It Your Pipe or the City's?
This is the first question we ask on the phone, because it decides who should be called and whether a plumber visit will help.
Check the other drains.
Run a hot water tap upstairs for a minute. If the lowest tub or floor drain gurgles or rises, the main line is blocked. If only one fixture is slow, the problem is a branch line and a smaller clog.
Ask the neighbors.
If houses on your street have the same trouble at the same time, the city main may be blocked. Do not guess. Call Public Works at 817-297-2201 during business hours.
Look at the street.
Sewage flowing out of a manhole cover is a city main problem. After-hours wastewater backup reports go to Police Dispatch at 817-297-2276, and you should call them before you call us.
Find your cleanout.
Most homes have a capped 3 or 4 inch pipe near the foundation or the property line. If sewage is standing in that pipe, the blockage sits between the cleanout and the city, or in the line downstream of it. Do not open a cleanout with sewage standing in it.
What Clogs a Crowley Main Line
Grease is the usual culprit. Cooking fat goes down warm and liquid, then cools and sticks to the pipe wall, narrowing a 4 inch line a little more every month. Disposable wipes labeled flushable do not break down, and they catch on roots and joint offsets.
Roots come second. Fine roots enter a joint, grow into a mat that works like a net, and hold everything that passes. In clay-heavy North Texas soil that swells and shrinks with the weather, joints shift, and each shift can give roots a new entry point.
Cleaning does not change the pipe, but the standards behind it matter. According to Crowley's local amendment, underground plastic drain pipe is laid on 4 inches of granular bedding, which is why a gentle cable beats an aggressive one on older runs.
Cabling or Jetting: Matching the Tool to the Clog
Both tools clear a line. They work differently, and the right choice depends on what is in the pipe.
| Method | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Cable machine (snake) | A rotating steel cable with a cutter head bores through the blockage. | Roots, soft clogs and fast access to a stopped line. |
| Hydro jetting | A nozzle sends water at high pressure to scour the pipe wall. | Grease buildup, scale and a full clean-out of the line. |
| Camera after cleaning | A lighted camera on a push cable shows the pipe's condition. | Confirming the line is open and spotting damage. |
For the water-pressure method in detail, see our hydro jetting page.
Drains backing up now?
Call (817) 601-6266 and we will tell you what to shut off and book a same-day visit when one is available.
How a Cleaning Visit Goes
We locate the cleanout and place a drop cloth. Then we run a cable machine sized to the pipe, a 3/4 inch to 1 1/2 inch cable for a typical home main, until the line flows. On roots we use a cutter head, and on grease we often follow with a jetting pass so the pipe wall is actually clean.
After the line is open we run the camera. A clean line with no damage ends the visit. If the footage shows a crack, belly or offset, we show you the images and explain the next step, which may involve sewer line repair. If you would like a stand-alone look at your line, our sewer inspection visits cover that.
Keeping the Line Open Afterward
A cleaned line that gets the same abuse will clog again. These habits make the difference.
- Wipe grease from pans.Scrape fat into a can and throw it in the trash instead of rinsing it down the sink.
- Only toilet paper in the toilet. No wipes, no cotton balls, no feminine products, even if the package says flushable.
- Know where your cleanout is.A cleanout lets us clear the line without pulling a toilet.
- Watch tree roots. If a tree stands over the line, schedule a camera check every year or two.
- Call after the second clog.A line that clogs twice in a few months usually has a physical defect that cleaning alone will not fix.
Why Sewer Cleaning Costs Differ
We quote a clear price before work starts. These are the things that change it.
Homeowners policies usually cover sudden and accidental water damage and usually do not cover a clog caused by roots or wear. If sewage damaged the floors, photograph it and ask your carrier about a water backup endorsement.
Who Handles What in Crowley
The City of Crowley Public Works department handles wastewater collection. The city pages do not say where the city's responsibility ends, so ask Public Works where the city side ends. We work on the home-side line and will tell you plainly if the problem looks like it sits on the city side.
Serving Crowley and the Neighboring Towns
We take cleaning calls across Crowley and the surrounding area, including Burleson, plus Everman and Forest Hill. If your drains are slow but not backing up, our drain cleaning service handles the smaller branch lines.
Sewer Cleaning Questions
Yes. We are open 24/7, and a backed-up main line is a call we take at any hour. Stop using water, tell us which drains are rising, and we will schedule the earliest same-day or after-hours visit available.
If neighbors have the same problem or a manhole is overflowing, call Public Works at 817-297-2201 or, after hours, Police Dispatch at 817-297-2276. If only your house is backing up, the blockage is probably in your line.
Cabling is quicker for roots and stoppages. Jetting does a more thorough job on grease. We choose based on what the first pass shows.
Not when the tool is matched to the pipe. We use camera footage to check for cracked or fragile sections before applying high pressure.
If you have a history of clogs or large trees, once every year or two is common. Otherwise clean it when a problem appears.
